Charli XCX On Loving The ‘90s & Breaking Fashion’s Rules
We took up-and-coming alt-pop star and style rebel Charli XCX out shopping at Victoria’s Secret Lexington Avenue last week. While browsing the lingerie racks, we had a chance to chat with the buzzy Brit about personal style, ‘90s influence and—naturally—lingerie! How would you describe your personal style in 5 words or less?
Nightwear as daywear!
We read that you love ‘90s style. Why are you so drawn to the looks from that decade and who are your style icons?
I just think fashion was most fun at that time. I like how a lot of the looks throughout the ‘90s verged on looking so wrong that they were just so right! Also, I know this is such a cheesy thing to say but I think fashion should be fun and to me that’s what the ‘90s is. My style icons from the ‘90s are definitely Rose McGowan and Mariah Carey.
We love your new video for “Break The Rules” and are super excited for your second album’s release this October. What’s your favorite rule to break in fashion?
Every rule! I like color clashes, I like wearing pajamas in the day time and I love wearing sunglasses indoors. My favorite pages in fashion magazines are the pages where they talk about the people who “got it wrong” ‘cause they always look the best!
In another interview you mentioned that you see music in colors and your favorite musical colors are black, pink, purple or red. Do you have any lingerie color preferences?
I love black just because it’s classic and sexy. I also love baby pink when I’m feeling a little sweeter.
All the songs you write are so catchy: “Fancy”, “I Love It”, and “Boom Clap” are in heavy rotation everywhere! What inspires your lyrics?
It all just flows from my brain and I don’t really think about things too much whilst I’m writing them, but I guess I’m inspired by my favorite movies like The Craft and Clueless. Also Robert Palmer music videos and favorite photographers like David LaChapelle.
Everyone is calling “Fancy” the song of the summer. What’s your favorite summer song of all time?
Ahhhh… I don’t know probably any Britney song. She’s my all time favorite!
